(about 2 hours later)
Cabinet Office minister Brooks Newmark has resigned from the government, Downing Street has said. Cabinet Office minister Brooks Newmark has resigned from the government after allegedly being caught sending explicit pictures of himself over the internet to women, in a tabloid newspaper sting operation.
Newmark, the Conservative MP for Braintree, said he was resigning as minister for civil society after being “notified of a story to be published in a Sunday newspaper”. After being told that the story would appear in a Sunday newspaper, the Conservative MP for Braintree and campaigner to increase the role and number of women in politics issued a statement saying he was quitting. He appealed for privacy for himself and his family.
In a statement he said: “I would like to appeal for the privacy of my family to be respected at this time. I remain a loyal supporter of this government as its long term economic plan continues to deliver for the British people.’ Newmark said: “I have decided to resign as minister for civil society having been notified of a story to be published in a Sunday newspaper,” he said.
A Downing Street spokesman said: “The prime minister has accepted Brooks Newmark’s resignation from his role as minister for civil society.” “I would like to appeal for the privacy of my family to be respected at this time. I remain a loyal supporter of this government as its long term economic plan continues to deliver for the British people.”
More details soon Downing Street said his resignation had been accepted and that Newmark had been replaced by Rob Wilson, a former aide to the chancellor, George Osborne.
