More follows A judge at Cardiff Crown Court had told Bidgway he faced life in prison, at the end of the trial on Wednesday.
His barrister David Aubrey QC told the court on Thursday staff at Cardiff prison initially thought he had tried to kill himself but it was also believed he may have suffered a stroke.
This is very unfortunate and very sad Mr Justice Davis
Bidgway was taken to the University Hospital of Wales, Cardiff
"He is presently in the intensive care unit on a ventilator and is presently unconscious. Tests are being carried out to see what was the cause of his collapse," Mr Aubrey said.
He added that Bidgway, who did not appear in the dock for much of his trial at his own request, had earlier expressed a wish to be in court when he was sentenced.
The judge, Mr Justice Davis, adjourned the case until the end of next week.
"This is very unfortunate and very sad," the judge said.
During his week-long trial, the court had heard that Bidgway "snapped" when his wife, who had been having an affair, offered him money and told him to meet someone else.
Declared unfit
In a taped police interview played to the jury, Bidgway told how he strangled his wife and suffocated her with a pillow and a plastic bag.
The court heard Bidgway then tried to suffocate his sleeping son William, two, but stopped when he woke up.
He then tried to take his own life with black plastic DIY ties but failed because his hands were too sweaty ro pull them tight, the court heard.
The defence case was that Bidgway lacked the necessary intent to kill his son
But the jury found Bidgway guilty on both charges on Wednesday.
During the trial, Bidgway had been declared unfit to give evidence after breaking down a number of times in the dock.
He had to be taken from the dock as he broke down while listening to his taped confession to police.
