Eniola Aluko has become the first female pundit in the 50-year history of the BBC’s Match of the Day. The Chelsea and England striker made her debut on the live lunchtime MOTD2 Extra webcast, hosted by Mark Chapman, as part of a panel including the veteran commentator John Motson and the former Republic of Ireland international Kevin Kilbane. Aluko, sister of the Hull City striker Sone, criticised Wayne Rooney’s red card hack at Stewart Downing during Manchester United’s victory over West Ham: “There were four recovering defenders – there was no need for him to make that foul. There was no need for him to lash out like that.” Thanks for all your comments :) Im honoured to be the 1st ever female football pundit on @BBCMOTD Theres a 1st for everything :) After the broadcast, Aluko, whose clubs include Charlton Athletic, St Louis Athletica, Atlanta Beat, and Birmingham City, took to Twitter to acknowledge the milestone. She said: “Thanks for all your comments :) Im honoured to be the 1st ever female football pundit on @BBCMOTD Theres a 1st for everything.” |
