(about 3 hours later)
Tunisia’s election commission has announced that 27 candidates will be competing in November’s presidential election. For the first time, a woman, Judge Kalthoum Kannou, will be running for president. Tunisia overthrew its dictator in 2011, and elections for Parliament in late October and for president on Nov. 23 are intended to complete the country’s transition to democracy. Polls show Beji Caid Essebsi a secular politician in his 80s, as the front-runner. Other prominent candidates include President Moncef Marzouki, a doctor and human rights activist. The election commission said Tuesday that the 27 were chosen from 70 applications, with the rest not meeting requirements.
