Logan Wood, from Oswaldtwistle, was seriously injured at Cowm Quarry, Tong Lane, Whitworth, near Rochdale, at 14:45 BST on Wednesday. He was taken to Fairfield Hospital, Bury, by air ambulance, where he died. It is believed he was practising on the site's motocross track. An accident investigation has been launched into what happened. The quarry has been used for off-road motor sports and trials since the 1950s. 'Love of life' Logan, a pupil at Mount Carmel Roman Catholic High School in Accrington, is understood to have been on a half-day off from school. Paying tribute, his family said he would "always be remembered for his courage, wit, sense of humour, his love of life and all its adventures". Rossendale Council said it is leading the investigation following discussions with Lancashire Police and the Health and Safety Executive. Site owner Cowm Leisure Limited refused to comment on the incident. In 2006, Matthew Entwistle, 14, died from multiple injuries after being thrown from a bike taking part in the Enduro trials motorcycle event at the site. Cowm Leisure was fined £3,500 after admitting failure to discharge a duty of care. |
