Libya: Islamist Militias Batter Soldiers Near Benghazi
Version 0 of 1. At least 13 Libyan soldiers were killed and more than 70 were wounded Thursday in car bombings and clashes with Islamists near the airport in the eastern city of Benghazi, military officials said. Two car bombs struck an army convoy, killing three soldiers, and at least 10 others died in clashes with Islamist militiamen who control most of the city, the officials said. The airport is the last remaining bastion in Benghazi of forces of a former general, Khalifa Hifter, who launched a military campaign against the Islamists in May. The Islamists, who evicted General Hifter’s forces from bases in Benghazi in July, have been trying to take the airport for the past month. |
