A man charged with four counts of attempted murder following a string of alleged assaults at a caravan park has been found dead in prison.

William O'Mara, 45, of Norland Drive, Morecambe, was due before Preston Crown Court on Monday.

A Prison Service spokesman said Mr O'Mara was found in his cell at about 03:20 BST on Thursday.

He faced charges following events at the Ocean Edge Leisure Park in Heysham on 20 September.

He is said to have attacked a woman with a glass bottle.

A short time late, a car - said to be driven by Mr O'Mara - drove through the site security barrier away from the scene, knocking down Paul Clark, 42, near the caravan park entrance.

Mr Clark, from Heysham, died in hospital from his injuries.

Mr O'Mara was also accused of driving into a dog-walker and of causing a head-on crash with another motorist.

He was charged with four counts of attempted murder, section 18 wounding with intent, two counts of section 18 grievous bodily harm with intent and assault on a police constable.

The Prison Service spokesman said the Independent Prisons and Probation Ombudsman would conduct an investigation.
