Sofie Gråbøl, star of the hit television series The Killing, has said her first appearances on stage in the UK have been “like a fairy tale” after “a very dark year” fighting breast cancer.

The actor ruled out appearing in a fourth series of the Danish serial killer drama, but left a crumb of hope for passionate fans of her knitwear – though they will have to be extremely patient.

Gråbøl appears as Margaret of Denmark, queen of James III of Scotland, in The James Plays, an Edinburgh festival hit that has just opened at the National Theatre in London. Her performances are already sold out for the entire run, save for day tickets and returns.

Gråbøl told the BBC’s Andrew Marr that she is fulfilling a long-held ambition by working on stage in the UK. “I have to pinch myself when I get off the tube at Embankment and walk across the bridge into this lovely theatre. I just really, really love working here.”

“I have actually wanted to come and work in the UK ever since The Killing was so warmly received here”, she said. “I won’t say that it’s a dream come true, because I would never have dreamed that this would happen to me, but I feel very very grateful. My life has been very turbulent these past years, it’s been very dramatic and this year – it’s like a fairy tale, really.”

Marr recalled his own stroke last year, and asked if her experience of breast cancer had been “pretty terrifying”. “It was a very, very dark year. My world closed in when I got ill and actually in that year I couldn’t imagine the world opening again for me,” she said. “But it did, and when it does, it’s very intense, and frightening actually, and wonderful.”

Gråbøl ruled out another series of The Killing – almost. “I think the writer can’t see it and I definitely can’t see it. I think it wouldn’t feel dignified, it would feel a bit like milking it. It felt very finished when it was finished, in a good way.”

The famous jumper worn by her character, Sarah Lund – seven of them, actually – lives in her wardrobe, but she never wears it. “It would feel pathetic really. And actually I so enjoy wearing the Queen Margaret’s dresses.”

But she held out a glimmer of hope for a new knit in the distant future for fans. “Maybe, when I’m much, much older – like Miss Marple in knitwear – I can knit my own, in a rocking chair – that could be fun.”
