(Noon): London's leading shares edged higher in Monday morning trading, with banks among the top gainers. (Close): London's leading shares gained ground on Monday, with miners leading the way.
By lunchtime, the benchmark FTSE 100 index was up 28.57 points, or 0.44%, at 6,556.48. The benchmark FTSE 100 index closed up 35.74 points, or 0.6%, at 6,563.65.
Barclays was the star performer on the index, rising 2.4%, while HSBC added 0.6% and Royal Bank of Scotland made gains of 0.5%. Miner Antofagasta was up 3.8%, with Fresnillo 3.5% higher and Anglo American rising 2.6%
Retailer Sports Direct International was the worst performer, falling 1.3% after a broker downgrade. Barclays also performed well, rising 3.4%, while Tesco enjoyed some respite from its recent troubles, rising 2.7% after appointing two non-executive directors to strengthen its boardroom.
