Grieving mother's gun crime plea

The mother of a teenager who was shot dead in south London earlier this year has called on the government to do more to tackle gun crime.

James Smartt-Ford, 16, was killed during a disco at Streatham ice rink in February but no-one has been charged with his murder so far.

His mother, Tracey Smartt-Ford, said people were too scared to speak out.

"Other young boys have died and been murdered and perpetrators are not being punished," she said.

She urged witnesses of the shooting to come forward but said there was a fear in the community about speaking out.

Mrs Smartt-Ford said the government should be doing more to tackle this issue.

Her family, she said, were still finding it hard to come to terms with James' murder.

James had been a lively character who loved life and had just started a college course, she said.
