Billy McKinlay is poised to leave his post as Watford’s manager a little more than a week after being appointed to replace Óscar García, according to reports on Monday night.

The Scot became Watford’s third manager this season following the departure of the former Brighton manager García due to ill health last week. However, despite guiding his new side to a win and a draw from his first two matches in charge, the Daily Mail reported that McKinlay is set to leave Vicarage Road, with bookmakers installing the former Blackburn midfielder as the favourite to take over at Fulham.

McKinlay spent nine years at Craven Cottage as a coach under Lawrie Sanchez, Roy Hodgson and Martin Jol, before leaving in 2012. The 45-year-old had been working as an assistant to the Northern Ireland manager, Michael O’Neill, when he was approached by Watford last week, initially to become first-team coach under García.

The Italian Giuseppe Sannino surprisingly left his post as Watford manager at the end of August and was replaced by García. If McKinlay does depart, it will leave the owner, Giampaolo Pozzo, searching for his fourth manager in six weeks with his side currently third in the Championship table.
