The court heard the attacks happened in an "explosion of violence". Winter had denied murdering Mr Anker.
He admitted the attempted murder of Mrs Anker.
The court heard the attacks happened on 14 November at the couple's flat on Burr Hill Chase during an "explosion of violence".
'Selfish obsession'
Prosecutor Peter Gair told the court Mr Winter had discussed the Jimmy Savile scandal with his grandparents, before getting a bread knife from the kitchen and carrying out the attack.
The court heard Winter, of Westborough Road, Westcliff, first attacked his grandmother, stabbing her in the arm, but she managed to escape.
Jurors were told that to try and gain a confession out of his grandfather he bound Mr Anker's hands and feet. He stabbed him in his neck, arms and chest.
During the trial, the jury heard Winter phoned police after the attack and told them: "I've killed my grandparents."
In Winter's defence, Peter Griffiths, QC, said it was a "very sad" and "tragic" case, but stated it was not a planned murder and the "explosion of violence" was "completely uncharacteristic" of the defendant.
Sentencing him Judge Christopher Ball, QC, said Winter had developed an "utterly selfish obsession" over the allegations and tried to take the law into his own hands.
He said Winter had done nothing to bring the allegations to the attention of the police and had "punished" his grandfather for his own personal hurt, having had a close relationship with Mr Anker.
The judge said it "so easily" could have been a double murder.
