Version 0 of 1.

An anthropologist, Kate Fox, has said that the word “typical” best sums up the English. Speaking at the Cheltenham literature festival, the writer of Watching the English explained that the word could and had been used in nearly all situations, and added that it could almost be a national catchphrase. “You have to be able to say it in a way that sounds simultaneously peeved, but also kind of stoically resigned, and at the same time smugly omniscient — almost pleased that your predictions have been fulfilled.”

Would you agree that “typical” is the best word to sum up the English or would you suggest “sorry”, or perhaps “excuse me”?

Tell us what you’d plump for when picking a catchphrase for your country or region.
