Cyprus: Unity Talks Are Halted
http://www.nytimes.com/2014/10/08/world/europe/cyprus-unity-talks-are-halted.html Version 0 of 1. President Nicos Anastasiades suspended talks Tuesday on reunifying ethnically divided Cyprus in response to plans by Turkey to search for oil and gas in waters where Cyprus has already licensed companies to drill. A Cypriot government spokesman, Nicos Christodoulides, called Turkey’s move “aggressive,” accusing Turkey of undermining regional stability. Cyprus was divided into an internationally recognized Greek-speaking south and a breakaway Turkish-speaking north in 1974 when Turkey invaded after a coup that aimed to unite the island with Greece. Turkey does not recognize Cyprus and opposes its offshore energy search. |
