Two young men accused of unleashing and filming a torrent of racial abuse at a Brisbane train security guard will face court on Monday.

Video footage of the attack, allegedly shot by one of the accused, went viral after it was uploaded on social media.

It’s alleged to have happened on a train at Indooroopilly on 2 October after one of the pair was asked to take his feet off a seat.

Police have not been able to confirm reports the teenagers turned themselves in after they received scores of death threats on social media.

The pair, aged 17 and 18, spent the night in a Brisbane watchhouse and will face the Brisbane magistrates court on Monday.

The 17-year-old has been charged with assault occasioning bodily harm, creating a nuisance on a railway, threatening violence, common assault and using a carriage service to menace or harass.

His 18-year-old friend has been charged with creating a nuisance on a railway.

The prime minister, Tony Abbott, and Queensland premier, Campbell Newman, have labelled the attack disgusting and deplorable, and Newman has praised the security guard’s grace in the face of the abuse.

“I think he responded very professionally in what was a very difficult situation,” the premier said, adding he had thanked the guard and expressed his disgust about the attack.
