A member of staff was not seriously hurt and has been taken to hospital while villagers have been warned to expect some disruption in the area. The sub postmistress suffered cuts to her face and minor shock and was taken to hospital for treatment.
Police have cordoned off the area while a thorough examination of the building is carried out. The building was sealed off for several hours while a bomb disposal squad examined the package. Police confirmed the incident was not suspicious.
The member of staff was taken to the Royal Devon and Exeter Hospital for treatment. The Post Office branch is located in a Londis shop in the village.
A police spokesman said they were keeping an open mind as to the circumstances and reasons for the incident. Caution urged
A police investigation will get under way once the scene is declared safe. The Royal Mail spokesman said: "As far as we know the small explosion was innocuous."
The woman was taken to the Royal Devon and Exeter Hospital for treatment but she is not believed to be seriously injured.
Assistant Chief Constable Bob Pennington said: "I would like to thank the public for their patience during this incident.
"Fortunately Explosive Ordinance Disposal officers were able to deal with the package at the scene and things were quickly returned to normal."
