Liam Gallagher has announced that his band Beady Eye has split up after five years.

He posted the news on Twitter on Saturday and thanked fans for their support – but he offered no reason why they were disbanding.

The band formed in 2009 and was made up of Gallagher, former Oasis members Gem Archer, Andy Bell and drummer Chris Sharrock.

Gallagher’s tweet read: “Beady Eye are no longer. Thanks for all your support. LGx”

Shortly after the post appeared Bell also tweeted: “Thanks to all the Beady Eye fans. I had a blast. See you on the other side. Big Love Andy B X.”

Fans immediately took to social media to speculate about the possibility of the announcement leading to Gallagher reforming Oasis with his brother Noel.

Beady Eye released two albums, the first Different Gear, Still Speeding in 2011 and the second BE in 2013 but neither enjoyed the sucess of their former band. Both reached the top 5 in the UK offical album chart but they had just one top 40 single with The Roller in 2011.

The band split with their manager Scott Rodger last month. He told NME that the band was one of the “last great British rock bands”.

They reached a global audience when they performed the Oasis classic Wonderwall during the closing ceremony of the 2012 London Olympic games.

The Gallagher brothers had a dramatic bust up in August 2009 which led to Oasis splitting and the pair refusing to speak to each other. However, it was reported that the buried the hatchet in January this year when they met at a family wedding.
