Christmas stockings will be lacking somewhat this year as Cadbury revealed that chocolate coins have been discontinued, the company announced yesterday.

This came as a shock to many Twitter users as the news was broken last night by the confectionery firm answering a Telegraph journalist Harry Wallop's question about no longer selling the foil-wrapped chocolates.

The chocolate makers, established in Birmingham in 1824 before being bought by US firm Kraft Foods in 2010, said: "@hwallop Chocolate coins have been discontinued however we have lots of other chocolatey treats to try."

Disgruntled customers lamented the loss and stated that cheaper supermarket alternatives are not the same as the Cadbury version.

Michael Pattinson (‏@MikePattinson) said: "Woken up to hear some extremely sad news. @CadburyUK are to stop making chocolate coins, Christmas cancelled."

The reason for discontinuing the much-loved sweets, which have been taken down from the Christmas section of the Cadbury website, is said to be down to the "fiddly" production and that they cannot be changed to the company's distinctive purple colour.

Shoppers who want to cut the cost of festive food were looking to discount supermarkets such as Lidl and Aldi, who stock their own chocolate coins, the company also suggested.

However, not everyone seems happy to plump for the cheaper varieties as Jane Willis (@janesgrapevine) said: "Everyone gets a bag of @CadburyUK chocolate coins and a satsuma in their stockings, even the adults. Cheaper ones WILL NOT DO"

"We are sorry to see the coins go, but that's business," a Cadbury spokesman said.

An e-petition has been launched in a hope to reverse the decision and one person has signed it so far.

The embossed coins are traditionally given inside stockings and hung as tree decorations and the practice is believed to have been started by Saint Nicholas.
