Police have appealed for anyone with information concerning either incident to contact them. Superintendent Brian Maguire, district commander for the Castlereagh area, said the attacks were appalling.
"They are absolutely totally unacceptable in today's society and I can assure you that a rigorous investigation is under way," he said.
Superintendent Maguire said police were looking for information on five men who were travelling in a silver Ford Focus car in relation to the attack on the man in Castlereagh.
Anyone with information concerning either incident has been asked to contact detectives.
