'In-flight anomaly' on Virgin SpaceShipTwo One dead in Virgin Galactic SpaceShipTwo test crash
(35 minutes later)
Virgin Galactic says that its SpaceShipTwo space tourism craft has suffered an "in-flight anomaly". At least one person is dead and another injured after Virgin Galactic's SpaceShipTwo space tourism craft crashed in a California desert, the California Highway Patrol has said.
The craft was being tested in the Mojave Desert region of California. Virgin Galactic said it would issue a fuller statement shortly. The craft was undergoing manned testing when it experienced what the company described as "a serious anomaly".
Local police said they were responding to reports of a crash in Cantil. Television images shot from a helicopter showed what appeared to be wreckage bearing the Virgin logo.
SpaceShipTwo is carried by a special jet and released, before igniting its rocket to go into sub-orbit and return as a glider. SpaceShipTwo is carried aloft by a jet, then launched into sub-orbit.
In a statement, Virgin Galactic said the "vehicle suffered a serious anomaly resulting in the loss of SpaceShipTwo".
The jet, known as White Knight 2, has landed safely.
The firm has been a front-runner in the nascent space-tourism industry and its chief said earlier in October it expected to see the craft make it to sub-orbital space within a few months.
