Briton held over Hong Kong murders Briton held over Hong Kong murders after bodies of two women found
(about 17 hours later)
A British man has been arrested over a double-murder in Hong Kong. A 29 year-old British man has been arrested in Hong Kong after police found the mutilated corpses of two women in his upscale apartment.
Police in the former UK colony said a 29-year-old man was held after the bodies of two women were found at an address in the Wan Chai district. One of the women aged between 25 and 30 was found with wounds to her neck and buttock, and pronounced dead at the scene. Authorities were called to the flat in Wan Chai district, a bustling nightlife area near the city’s financial centre, at around 3.42am on Saturday morning. A naked woman, believed to be aged between 25 and 30, was found in the living room with knife wounds to her neck and buttocks, according to local media reports. She was pronounced dead at the scene.
The body of the other victim was found inside a suitcase on the balcony and she had sustained neck injuries, police said. Hours later, police found a second body in a black suitcase on the balcony of the apartment. The corpse was wrapped in a carpet, and was already in a state of decay.
A Foreign Office spokeswoman said: “We can confirm that a British national has been arrested in Hong Kong. We are in touch with the local police and stand ready to provide consular assistance.” “We believe the woman had been dead for quite some time,” Wan Siu-hung, Wan Chai assistant district commander for crime, told the South China Morning Post.
Officers were called to the address reportedly an apartment in the early hours and later seized a knife. A police statement said the body was found to have neck injuries. “Post-mortem examinations will be conducted later to ascertain the causes of death of the deceased,” it added.
A statement from Hong Kong Police said: “Police are investigating a murder case in Wan Chai in the small hours of today in which a foreign woman aged between 25 and 30, and another woman were killed. The man reportedly placed the call that led the authorities to his apartment. Police arrested him at the scene, and after searching the flat, seized a knife.
“At about 3.42am, a 29-year-old foreign man made a report and requested police to investigate a case in a unit at 60 Johnston Road, Wan Chai. CCTV footage showed the suspect entering the building with a woman at around midnight. Local media reported that the man worked for a “global bank” and that both victims were sex workers and foreign nationals, possibly from southeast Asia.
“Police sped to the scene and an unconscious woman aged 25 to 30 was found lying inside the unit. She was certified dead at scene. The Foreign and Commonwealth Office in London has confirmed that a British national was arrested in Hong Kong. “We are in touch with the local police and stand ready to provide consular assistance,” it said, without providing further details. A police spokesperson would not confirm the suspect’s identity. He has not been formally charged with a crime.
“Police found a suitcase on the balcony, and a female dead body with neck injuries was found inside the suitcase. Violent crime is rare in Hong Kong. The city has one of the lowest homicide rates in the world.
“Police arrested the 29-year-old man at the scene for murder. He is being detained for enquiries. A knife was seized at the scene.
“Postmortem examinations will be conducted later to ascertain the causes of death of the deceased.”
