Part of a Tyneside estate has been cordoned off after "suspicious items" were found at a property, police said. About 50 residents of a Newcastle housing estate remain unable to return home after police found a number of "suspicious items".
Officers were called to Hamilton Place in the west end of Newcastle earlier, following concern for a man. Officers were called to Hamilton Crescent earlier following reports of concern for a man's welfare.
A search of an address was carried out and a number of nearby properties have been evacuated. A bomb disposal team has been sent to the scene. An address was searched, prompting the area to be evacuated, and an 18 year old was arrested.
Northumbria Police said a man had been arrested and the incident was ongoing. A bomb disposal team from Catterick Garrison was called and later left the scene. Police remain in attendance.
Residents have been told they are not likely to be allowed to return home for a number of hours.
Northumbria Police said: "Suspicious items have been located at the address and inquiries are ongoing to establish exactly what they are.
"As a precaution, around 50 people have been evacuated from nearby properties to a safety welfare centre coordinated by the local authority.
"There is a police presence at the scene to help anyone with any concerns and provide reassurance."
