The All Blacks great Jonah Lomu and the team’s current fullback, Israel Dagg, are among those referred to police by New Zealand’s Electoral Commission over social media activity on election day.

The sports stars are in hot water after posting comments saying how they voted. It’s illegal to campaign or try to influence voters while polls are open on election day in New Zealand.

Lomu tweeted “@johnkeypm All the best for Tonight Get in there everyone your last chance to vote and grow NZ Go ‘National’,” on election day, 20 September.

Eric Murray, the Olympic gold medal-winning rower, also tweeted support for National, while Dagg shared who got his vote on Twitter.

The Electoral Commission said the comments by Lomu, Murray and Dagg were among seven referred to police involving people publishing material indicating how they voted and/or publishing statements likely to influence voters.
