M5 motorway reopened after 'serious' crash near Tewkesbury Van passenger killed in M5 crash near Tewkesbury
(about 4 hours later)
The M5 has been reopened between Gloucestershire and Worcestershire after a "serious" crash. A passenger in a van has been killed in a crash on the M5 near Tewkesbury, close to the Worcestershire border.
A lorry collided with a van between junctions nine for Tewkesbury and eight for the M50 at 19:00 GMT on Thursday. Gloucestershire Police said the crash, involving a lorry and a white Sprinter box van, happened on the northbound carriageway about half a mile south of Junction 8 at around 18:40 GMT on Thursday.
The northbound carriageway was closed between junctions 11 and eight, but reopened fully at 04:15 on Friday. The man, aged 29 and from the Derby area, was pronounced dead at the scene.
The lorry driver was taken to hospital in Birmingham with leg and chest injuries. It is not known what injuries the van driver suffered. The van driver, from West Bromwich, was badly injured.
Shortly after the crash occurred, a Gloucestershire Police spokesman described it as a "serious and difficult" incident. The motorway was closed northbound for several hours while emergency services attended the crash.
It reopened fully at 04:15.
