Manchester United have backtracked on their tweet that Daley Blind could be out for six months with the knee injury he sustained this week playing for Holland, but Louis van Gaal admitted that it will be a ‘long story’. Daley Blind faces an extended period out due to the knee-ligament injury the Manchester United midfielder sustained playing in Holland’s 6-0 win over Latvia, with Louis van Gaal describing his recovery as a “long story”.
The manager was quoted on the club’s official twitter page confirming Blind was set for a six month absence, but this was quickly deleted and replaced with a tweet stating the opposite. The manager also stated Radamel Falcao may be out for another two weeks with his calf injury. The Colombian said: “I am getting better, I feel well and I hope to come back to the pitch soon. It is disappointing that I can’t play but I have to be calm and recover because that is important to help the team when I return to the games.”
“He has a brace on his knee,” Van Gaal revealed on Friday. “After 10 days’ rest, he’ll have another scan that will say more about the injury. It’s not as bad as the doctors thought after the match. It shall be a long story – but not six months or something.” While Luke Shaw is a doubt for Saturday’s trip to Arsenal due to the hamstring problem he suffered in England’s 3-1 win over Scotland, there was better news for Van Gaal though as he stated David De Gea, Ángel di María and Michael Carrick are available for Saturday’s trip to Arsenal despite each being injured while on international duty.
There was more positive news for the club with Michael Carrick, Angel Di María and David de Gea all fit for the Premier League match with Arsenal on Saturday – though Luke Shaw remains a doubt. Regarding Blind, Van Gaal said: “It’s not as bad as the doctors thought after the match. It shall be a long story - but not six months or something. He has a brace on his knee. “Di María has trained today normally so I don’t think that is a question mark, but Shaw is. De Gea is good, no problem. I think I have to wait for the reaction in training with Carrick, but I also expect he’s ready to play.”
While Marcos Rojo, Jesse Lingaard, and Ashley Young remain long-term absentees Van Gaal would not be drawn on whether Phil Jones, Jonny Evans, and Rafael Da Silva are match-fit and so available for Arsenal.
“It’s difficult to say because we have to wait and see the training session on Friday to decide if players are coming back,” he said. “My philosophy is that you have to train at least one week with the team - better two weeks. When you see our circumstances then maybe I have to bring players now in the squad, because of the circumstances.”
