Update at 11:38 a.m.: There are reports of thundersnow from Virginia to southwest Pennsylvania. Thunder and lightning can occur in snow storms when vertical motion in the atmosphere is very strong. This also means there’s the potential for very heavy snow. Giving these reports, snowfall rates at or above two inches per hour in the heaviest bands with severely reduced visibility, especially on the roads, would not be surprising.

Conditions continue to worsen around the area especially along and west of I-95 as heavy precipitation is dynamically cooling the air and snow is resulting. Dulles Airport reported heavy snow at 32F at 11 a.m. and just one-quarter mile visibility. That’s going to have an adverse effect on flights. BWI has switched from rain to snow, and is 35F. National Airport – which is right at sea level – is struggling to cool down and still reported rain at 11 a.m. and 40 degrees, even as downtown Washington and Capitol Hill report steady snow.Conditions continue to worsen around the area especially along and west of I-95 as heavy precipitation is dynamically cooling the air and snow is resulting.
