A police helicopter search of his usual bike route proved fruitless. A body was discovered one and a half miles from the village after a search operation by Mr Richards' friends and relatives, along with rescue teams.
Dave Counsel, a friend of Mr Richards who organised the search, said people had become "more concerned" for his welfare as the days had passed. North Wales Police said there were no suspicious circumstances.
Speaking before the operation, Mr Counsel said search teams would attempt to cover the Clocaenog Forest which was one of the "big areas around here to get lost". Saturday's operation had been organised after a search of Mr Richards' usual bike routes by a police helicopter had proved fruitless.
I desperately want to find Paul safe and well Deborah Richards The search began at 0830 BST, from the village of Llanfihangel Glyn Myfyr, a few miles from Cerrigydrudion.
He said: "Realistically, we can't really hope to search the whole forest in a day, or probably even a weekend, and certainly areas of the forest are incredibly dense you couldn't really get a search party in there. Speaking before the operation, Dave Counsel, a friend of Mr Richards who organised the search, said people had become "more concerned" as the days had passed.
"We do have some search dogs which will help that process," he added. Mr Counsel said a search would be carried out of the nearby Clocaenog Forest, helped by search dogs.
Mr Counsel said the centre-point of the search, which began at 0830 BST, was the village of Llanfihangel Glyn Myfyr, a few miles from Cerrigydrudion. He said when Mr Richards had left his house on Bank Holiday Monday, he had been wearing a cycling outfit and carrying very little with him.
'No-one really knows'
Mr Richards had last been seen when he left the house on August Bank Holiday Monday.
"He left wearing basically a cycling outfit with a bottle of water and his bike, and that was about it, he had very little money with him or credit cards or anything."
"He has a few regular cycle routes but no-one really knows what route he took for certain, or where he disappeared to," he explained.
"His wife isn't even sure which way he turned out of the house, so really we're guessing as to which areas to search."
He said people were becoming more concerned for Mr Richards as time went on.
'Extremely worried'
Mr Richards' wife Deborah appealed to local people to join the search, saying "I desperately want to find Paul safe and well."
"I am extremely worried and upset."
She also appealed for anyone who may have seen him to contact the police.
Mr Richards was last seen riding a blue "Graham Weigh" road bike when he left home, and is described as being 5ft 10in tall, of slight build with short curly dark hair.
He was wearing a purple waterproof jacket, long trousers and a cycling helmet.
