A man has been charged with carrying out a "brutal attack" on an elderly couple during a burglary at their home.

A 90-year-old man and his wife, in her 80s, sustained serious injuries during the raid at their house in Elm Grove, Scunthorpe, on Tuesday.

Harley Newland, 22, is accused of causing GBH with intent, robbery and possession of an imitation firearm, police said.

The man suffered throat injuries and his wife was left with head injuries.

Humberside Police said Mr Newland of River View, Mill Lane, Brigg, was due to appear at Scunthorpe Magistrates Court on Monday.

Det Insp John Cram said: "This was a brutal attack on two very elderly people in their own home just days before Christmas.

"We all hope the injured couple, who remain in hospital at this time, make a full recovery and are able to return to their home. Out thoughts are with them and with their family."

Police were called after members of the public saw a man running from the pensioners' home at about 17:20 GMT. A man was seen driving away in a white van.

A 27-year-old woman who was arrested on suspicion of assisting an offender has been released on police bail, and a 36-year-old man arrested in Brigg on Christmas Eve remains on police bail.
