A Louisiana man has stuck with a whiskey tradition by naming his newborn son Jim Beam.

Parents Jack Daniels Leathers and Lydia Leathers said they wanted to continue the tradition that was started by Mr Leathers’ father.

“My parents decided they wanted to name their son something to make their parents mad,” Jack Daniels told Houma Today.

“And, at the time, my dad was drinking Jack, which he enjoyed. My mom said, ‘Why not?’”

Mr and Mrs Leathers decided that Jim Beam, the Kentucky bourbon whiskey, would be the perfect name for their future child.

To ensure that the theme was extended to other parts of their lives, the pair located a Judge Johnny Walker to officiate at their marriage ceremony in Houma.

The Kentucky bourbon was the inspiration for the name of Mr and Mrs Leathers' son Evan Williams, another Kentucky bourbon, for a boy and Sherry for a girl are other name ideas for any further children they may have.

Jim Beam’s mother did say they have encountered criticism over their choice from some people, but she was unrepentant.

“At the end of the day, it's our son, and it's what we wanted to do,” she said.
