Swansea’s Jonjo Shelvey has been charged with violent conduct, the Football Association has announced.

Shelvey clashed with Liverpool’s Emre Can in Swansea’s 4-1 Premier League defeat at Anfield on Monday night when he appeared to fling back an arm into the face of the German defender, but the incident went unpunished at the time with referee Andre Marriner waving play on.

“Swansea City’s Jonjo Shelvey on Tuesday has been charged by the FA for violent conduct, following an incident in his side’s fixture with Liverpool,” said an FA statement.

“The incident, which was not seen by the match officials but caught on video, occurred during the fixture between the two sides at Anfield on Monday 29 December 2014. Shelvey has until 6pm on Wednesday 31 December 2014 to respond to the charge.”

If found guilty, Shelvey, who was sent off at Everton at the start of November, could face a four-match ban, starting at QPR on New Year’s Day. Meanwhile, Liverpool’s Raheem Sterling has escaped punishment despite seeming to strike Swansea defender Federico Fernández.

The Aston Villa midfielder Fabian Delph has lost his appeal against the red card he received in the draw with Sunderland. Delph was dismissed for a challenge on Jordi Gómez in the 0-0 Premier League stalemate.

The dismissal forced Paul Lambert to deny Villa were a dirty team after Kieran Richardson and Gabby Agbonlahor, who had his red card against Manchester United rescinded, were also sent off this month.

The 25-year-old will now miss the games against Crystal Palace and Leicester, as well as Villa’s third-round FA Cup tie at home to Blackpool.

Delph has been one of Lambert’s most consistent players of the season and has broken into the England reckoning, making his debut in September’s friendly victory over Norway and collecting two further caps in European Championship qualifiers.

The FA has also fined Villa £30,000 for failing to control their players in the wake of Agbonlahor’s dismissal against United.
