Toddler accidentally shoots and kills his mother in Idaho Wal-Mart, police say
(35 minutes later) | |
A woman was killed in an Idaho Wal-Mart Tuesday morning when her 2-year-old son accidentally shot her, according to local authorities.
Kootenai County Sheriff’s Department spokesman Lt. Stu Miller said in a statement that the boy was seated in a shopping cart when he reached into his mother’s purse and fired the gun.
The 29-year-old woman, who deputies found dead on the scene “from an apparent gunshot wound,” had been shopping with the toddler and other family members, Miller said.
The shooting “appears to be accidental” and authorities will identify the woman after her family has been notified, Miller said.
Authorities on the scene said three other children were with the woman, and that she had a permit for her concealed weapon, CBS affiliate KREM reported.
The woman was visiting from out of town, and the shooting took place as she was in the electronics section of the Wal-Mart in Hayden, ABC affiliate KXLY reported.
The store in northern Idaho was evacuated after the shooting, and Miller said it will remain closed until Wednesday morning.
“A very sad incident occurred at our store today involving the death of a female customer,” Wal-Mart said in a statement, KREM reported. “We are fully cooperating with the Kootenai County Sheriff’s deputies as they investigate this matter.”
Although accidental shootings by children do happen in the United States, there isn’t comprehensive data showing how often they occur, The Post has previously reported. | Although accidental shootings by children do happen in the United States, there isn’t comprehensive data showing how often they occur, The Post has previously reported. |
