Nigeria: Militants Attack Town Nigeria: Militants Attack Town
(about 2 hours later)
Gunmen opened fire in a town in northeast Nigeria, killing at least 15 people, witnesses and a security source said. The attack by men believed to be Islamist militants targeted Kautikari, near the Cameroon border, on Monday night. It is just six miles from the village of Chibok, where more than 200 schoolgirls were abducted in April. Most remain captives. Jonah Umaru, a resident of Kautikari, said by telephone: “The man running behind me was gunned down as I was fleeing. Afterward, there were 15 people lying dead in the streets.” Violence by Boko Haram militants, who are fighting to establish an Islamic state in Nigeria, have killed 10,340 people this year, according to a count by the Council on Foreign Relations last month.
