US media reported that Mr Gilbert had been involved in a domestic argument. His son, Thomas Gilbert Jr, 30, is being questioned by police but no charges have been filed.
No-one has been arrested. Police want to speak to Mr Gilbert's son in connection with the incident. Mr Gilbert, 70, was the founder and president of Wainscott Capital Partners, which was founded in 2011.
