Pilot Lewis Tonkinson and his wife, Sally, 44, died when their light aircraft crashed in woodland near Popham airfield in Hampshire after trying to land in bad weather.
Their son George was pulled from the wreckage and flown by air ambulance to the specialist neurological unit at Southampton General hospital, where he is being treated for life-threatening injuries. It is thought that the family were flying back to their countryside home after a trip to the Isle of Wight, taking off from Bembridge on Saturday afternoon.
A walker alerted the emergency services after witnessing the plane crash in Blackwood Forest near Basingstoke, close to the grass airstrip at Popham airfield. Three ambulance crews were joined by an air ambulance from the South Central ambulance service and its hazardous area response team, but Mr and Mrs Tonkinson were pronounced dead at the scene. The fire and rescue service also sent 25 firefighters who walked through the woodland to get to the isolated scene.
The Air Accident Investigation Branch said it had launched a investigation into the cause of the crash and that a report would be published in due course.
