A walker alerted the emergency services after witnessesing the plane crash in Blackwood Forest near Basingstoke, close to the grass airstrip at Popham airfield. Three ambulance crews were joined by an air ambulance from the South Central Ambulance Service and its hazardous area response team, but Mr and Mrs Tonkinson were pronounced dead at the scene. The fire and rescue service also sent 25 firefighters who walked through the woodland to get to the isolated scene.
