Two NYPD officers shot in the Bronx Two NYPD officers shot in the Bronx responding to robbery
(about 4 hours later)
Two New York police officers were shot in the Bronx late Monday night, police confirmed. Two plainclothes New York City police officers were shot and wounded in the Bronx late Monday night while responding to a robbery at a grocery store, police said.
The shooting occurred in the Fordham area in the west Bronx at about 10:30 p.m. local time Monday, NBC New York reported. The officers were transported to St. Barnabas Hospital with non-life threatening injuries, police said. Police said the shooting occurred in the Fordham area in the west Bronx at about 10:30 p.m. local time. A 30-year-old officer was shot in the back and a 38-year-old officer was shot in the arm. They were transported to St. Barnabas Hospital and were expected to survive. Both were listed in stable condition.
Police are searching for at least two attackers involved in the shooting that occurred as the officers tried to stop a vehicle, NYPD spokesman Kim Y. Royster told the New York Times. The officers were not targeted in the attack. Investigators recovered a gun at the scene, though it’s still unclear whether it belonged to either assailant. New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio (D) arrived at the hospital just after midnight Tuesday morning.
“This is something that they come upon,” she told the Times. “This is another indicator of the dangers our officers face in the line of duty,” de Blasio said at an early morning news conference. “Thank God, these officers will recover.”
Further details about the shooting have not been released. An NYPD spokesman declined comment to The Washington Post, saying the case is an ongoing investigation. The two officers, whose names have not been released, responded to a call about a robbery at a grocery store and saw two suspects who matched the alleged robbers’ description. When the officers identified themselves, one suspect who was inside a Chinese restaurant came outside and starting shooting, Police Commissioner William Bratton said, according to CNN.
Sources told CBS New York that the police involved were plainclothes officers investigating an incident at a business. A source told NBC New York it appeared one cop was shot in the arm and the other was shot in the back. Some news reports said the second officer was shot in the leg. Both officers were wounded in the exchange. Bratton said one of the suspects may have also been hit.
“This was a rough neighborhood in the 90s and it still is today,” John Cardillo, a former officer who has worked in the area, told CNN. “Robberies were common when I worked there and there were many shootings. Armed bad guys with the propensity to shoot someone.” The suspects then fled the scene and stole a car. The vehicle as well as a handgun were later recovered.
The shooting came a day after a number of NYPD officers turned their backs on Mayor Bill de Blasio (D) as he rose to speak Sunday at the funeral of slain officer Wenjian Liu. The suspects, both Hispanic, are still at large. The organization COP SHOT (Citizens Outraged at Police Being Shot) is offering a $10,000 cash reward for information leading to their arrest and conviction.
Liu and fellow NYPD officer Rafael Ramos were shot and killed last month while sitting in a patrol car in Brooklyn. “This was a rough neighborhood in the 90s and it still is today,” John Cardillo, a former officer who has patrolled the area, told CNN. “Robberies were common when I worked there and there were many shootings.
