A driver has been killed after their car hit a wild boar and was then struck by a lorry on one of Britain’s busiest motorways.

Emergency services were called to the M4 in between junctions 17 and 16 shortly before 7pm on Monday 5 December.

Wiltshire Police said that the driver of the Seat Ibiza car died at the scene. The lorry driver did require hospital treatment.

The crash led to lengthy queues on the M4 with traffic at a standstill for around four hours, with a full closure between Chippenham and Swindon eastbound overnight while police dealt with the collision.

The road eventually reopened after several hours at around 1am on Tuesday 6 December.

A South West Ambulance Service spokeswoman said four ambulances and a doctor were called to the scene.
