At midday Paris time, a fraction over 24 hours after two gunmen entered the Paris offices of the satirical magazine Charlie Hebdo and slaughtered 12 people, gatherings around the world were silent for a minute to commemorate those who died. Among those who did were staff and representatives at the European parliament in Brussels. In Paris, understandably, the silence was particularly respected – even on the Metro.
