Police in Canada have located the suspect in a shooting that left two Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) officers in the hospital, where one was reported to be in “very grave” condition and one “serious but stable”.

A statement issued on Saturday afternoon said: “The suspect who shot two RCMP officers earlier this morning in a St Albert casino has been located.” Police added that there was “no longer any public safety threat related to this incident”.

Earlier, police told media the shooting had occurred at 3am at the Apex Casino in St Albert, north-west of the provincial capital of Alberta, Edmonton, during an investigation into a stolen vehicle.

An RCMP criminal operations officer, Marlin Degrand, said the officers did not have a chance to fire back at the suspect, who fled the scene. The suspect was described as a white male aged between 25 and 35, wearing a two-toned blue striped jacket and jeans.

“This incident serves to remind us all of the dangers that our front-line responders everywhere face in the performance of their duties,” Degrand said.

The two wounded officers were not immediately named, as their families were being notified and the investigation was continuing.

The prime minister of Canada, Stephen Harper, issued a statement which said: “Canada’s thoughts & prayers are with RCMP Alberta officers today.”

After announcing the capture of the suspect, the RCMP said in a statement: “The RCMP thanks the public for the messages and support we have received on the part of the wounded officers and their families.”

Police asked the public to continue to stay away from “the area southeast of the Sturgeon Valley Golf Course until further notice”.
