Harry Redknapp has insisted that he is not worried about rumours that he is on the brink of the sack at Queens Park Rangers and believes that the way that his team played in their 2-0 defeat against Manchester United at Loftus Road proves that they can stay up.

It was reported last week that Redknapp could lose his job if QPR lost to United but he strongly denied those stories and said that he retains the support of the club’s owner, Tony Fernandes.

“I don’t worry about the owners,” Redknapp said. “That’s their choice, isn’t it, if they want to make a change. Because someone writes in one newspaper this week, suddenly everybody’s got to believe what that newspaper has written. Because the Daily Mirror decides, oh, an insider has said it.

“I spoke to Tony Fernandes this week five times and he’s never mentioned anything to me, he’s just said: ‘What a load of nonsense.’ I don’t know. Who do you believe? The insider, whoever he may be, who’s trying to cause a problem, or do we believe the chairman? I don’t worry. What will be will be. It’s up to them, it’s their club.”

QPR are 19th, a point behind Burnley in 17th, and have not won in the league since beating West Bromwich Albion on 20 December, a run that now stretches to five matches. “We’re still in amongst it,” Redknapp said. “The bottom seven teams, there’s nothing in it. Everton downwards, it’s going to be very close.”

QPR played well against United, who won thanks to goals in the second half from Marouane Fellaini and James Wilson, and Redknapp was full of praise for his players. However he admitted that QPR, who lost Richard Dunne to a groin injury, must improve away from home. They have failed to pick up a single point in 10 matches on their travels thisseason.

“Listen, the players work hard for me every week at home,” Redknapp said. “Our away form has been poor. We’re not a good counterattacking team because we don’t have a lot of pace in the team. We don’t really have genuine pace in too many positions. We need to put our away form right.”

Radamel Falcao was back in the side for United after his absence in last Sunday’s defeat by Southampton and although he missed a couple of glaring chances, Louis van Gaal was pleased with the Colombian’s general play. “He wants to score goals,” United’s manager said. “For me, I have to judge how he has played. Scoring goals is an important aspect of a striker but for me it is very important that he is an attacking point. I think he did it well.”
