Victoria Derbyshire’s daily BBC News Channel show is to become the “centrepiece of domestic daytime TV news”, simulcast on BBC2 and with video content aimed at a digital audience.

Derbyshire’s show – which does not yet have a title – will launch on BBC2 on 7 April and be hosted from London but include reports and debates from around the UK and from the BBC’s team of reporters.

News reports will be produced with an online audience in mind and in some cases will be distributed digitally – including via social media – before airing on the TV programme.

It is understood to be the first time a daily programme commissioned by the BBC News Channel has run on network television.

The corporation also announced on Monday it is launching a new morning business programme that will be broadcast simultaneously on its UK news channel and global TV service BBC World News.

The changes are in line with director of news James Harding’s strategy of making the BBC more focused on digital.

The award-winning Derbyshire joined the BBC News Channel last autumn from Radio 5 Live to develop a television programme that brought the immediacy of radio to television – featuring exclusive interviews, discussion and breaking news.

Harding said Derbyshire’s programme will be “the centrepiece of domestic daytime TV news”.

“In the year ahead, on the most important stories – the future shape of the UK, the health of the global economy – our audiences will rightly expect us to be at the very top of our game. With these new programmes, and their commitment to bringing new perspectives and powerful storytelling, we will be very well placed to meet this challenge.”

Derbyshire said: “We’re going to experiment with innovative ways of telling original stories, and give our audience a genuine opportunity to be at the heart of a TV news programme.”

Although it is the first time a programme commissioned by the BBC News Channel has transferred to network television, coverage from the 24-hour service is already broadcast on BBC2 after cuts forced it to switch to an afternoon diet of repeats and simulcasting news in 2013.

Meanwhile, BBC News’ new daily 30-minute business programme will air at 8.30am and be fronted by business journalists Ben Thompson and Sally Bundock.

It will begin on BBC World News – which also airs World Business Report – but following the general election will air on the BBC News Channel.
