Version 0 of 1. A British backpacker has been found dead on the same Thai island as two UK travellers were murdered on last year. Christina Annesley, from Orpington in South London, died in unknown circumstances mid-way through a four-month trip across south east Asia. There has been no suggestion of her death being caused by foul play. A Foreign Office spokesperson said the British government was aware of the backpacker’s death and was liaising with the woman’s family. “We can confirm the death of a British National in Thailand on 21 January 2014,” the spokesperson said. “We are providing consular assistance to the family at this difficult time.” In awe of how beautiful this place is... pic.twitter.com/8r21vPy4Li Ms Annesley died on the island of Koh Tao, where two British backpackers, Hannah Witheridge and David Miller, were murdered last September. She sent a number of tweets from Thailand shortly before she died, showing friends she had made and praising the natural beauty of the country. Thailand was "one of the most beautiful places in the world," she said. According to her Facebook profile, Ms Annesley previously worked at Dow Jones before embarking on the tour. She was active in political circles, having recently defected from the Conservatives to Ukip. The website The Commentator reported an anonymous family member as saying the woman died of natural cases. Friends and associates paid tribute to the woman on Twitter. Rory Broomfield, the director of think-tank The Freedom Association, said: "She was a fantastic person and a believer in individual freedom. My thoughts are with her family." A Twitter account belonging to another think-tank, the Adam Smith Institute, tweeted that Ms Annesley's "liveliness and humour brightened our lives". |
