What are British values?
Version 0 of 1. Historian David Starkey has said that British values are “queuing, drunkenness, nostalgia, loving pets, self-loathing, wit and eccentricity”. His comments were a response to the government’s own list: “democracy, the rule of law, individual liberty and mutual respect and tolerance of those with different faiths and beliefs”. Starkey also added, in case any of us were in any doubt: “I hate niceness”. But isn’t politeness supposed to be a British value? Perhaps you agree with his assertion that drunkenness and self-loathing are integral to the British character and outlook. Are we, in fact, a nation sobbing on the couch, whiskey in hand? A bunch of cat-adoring, bow-tie wearing wits? Tell us whether you agree, and if not, what you think British values are, or should be. |
