Sundance film festival: Me and Earl and the Dying Girl sweeps top prizes

Me and Earl and the Dying Girl, a film about a pair of student filmmakers who befriend a girl with cancer, won both the US dramatic audience award and the grand jury prize at the 31st Sundance film festival awards. Thomas Mann, RJ Cyler and Olivia Cooke lead the cast of the idiosyncratic tearjerker from director Alfonso Gomez-Rejon, who dedicated the award on Saturday to all the filmmakers and artists in his hometown of Laredo, Texas. Nick Offerman, Connie Britton and Molly Shannon also star. Comedian Tig Notaro, whose film Tig premiered at the festival, hosted the ceremony. Other winners included The Stanford Prison Experiment, a film about the notorious behaviour experiment at the university in 1971, which won the Alfred P Sloan feature film prize, and The Russian Woodpecker, an acclaimed documentary about Chernobyl which won the grand jury prize for best world cinema documentary. The 31st Sundance Film Festival ends on Sunday. |
