“Not this this is going to provide Simon McMahon any comfort, this Celtic supporter is not too pleased with the deals for Stuart Armstrong and Gary Mackay-Steven,” writes Paul Connelly. “Nothing against the players themselves, and I’m sure they will play well for Celtic but it’s too bad it will be at the expense of a close rival. It’s too bad this kind of transfer can take place in the January window and not be limited to the summer. I don’t know how one could structure a rule to prevent it, but I wish there was something that could be done. As we’ve seen too often in the past, moral suasion* doesn’t work when it comes to money.”
It does taste a little sour, but ‘twas ever thus, with big clubs buying their rivals’ best players. Hurts more mid-season than pre-season, though.
* Moral suasion: “It’s a pretty common phrase in N. America, or Canada at least,” Paul explains, “meaning persuading a person to act a certain way because it’s morally the right thing to do rather than legislating the prohibition of certain behaviour.”

After Liverpool being linked with a deal to sign Danny Ings and loan him back to Burnley, even though it would be totally against the rules, came the suggestion that Mauro Zarate might return to West Ham, who could send Matt Jarvis the other way. You’re not allowed to return from a loan in the same window as you leave, apparently, so that’s that one nixed.

Obviously not a great deal for United, but I think there are lots of clauses on his Palace deal, including a hefty sell-on, so it might not work out as badly as it perhaps now seems. He was a lollipop-addicted penalty-magnet during his first spell at Palace, but it may be that the Premier League is less full of defenders who clumsily fall for his schtick than the Championship.

away,” rages Simon McMahon. “The news that Dundee United have sold Stuart Armstrong and Gary Mackay-Steven to Celtic has made me feel physically sick. We play them in the League Cup final next month, for heaven’s sake! We’re still in the Scottish Cup, and within touching distance in the league, although second place is a more realistic possibility. It’s not as if we need the money as we’re debt free, having sold Andrew Robertson and Ryan Gauld in the summer for £6m. But to accept £2m for both to one of our main rivals shows a shocking lack of ambition from the club. Very, very unhappy tonight.”
With good reason, I fear. Commiserations.

So who’s got the best deadline-day surname. Is it new Sheffield Wednesday striker Sergiu Bus, or is it Wigan’s Gaëtan Bong? I’m going bang for bong.

Looks like Rickie Lambert would prefer Liverpool’s bench to Aston Villa’s first team. Perhaps he discussed his dilemma with Fabio Borini.
Rickie Lambert is staying at Liverpool and won't be joining Aston Villa.

One of the more unlikely January moves. A week ago Keshi Anderson was on trial at Brentford and played an Under-21 fixture against Crystal Palace. He scored a six-minute hat-trick, and the rest is history. A £35,000 fee is said to have changed hands. The 19-year-old has scored 19 goals in 29 games in the Southern League Division One Central this season.

“I see the Wikipedia elves have since gone and tidied up the Jim White wikipedia page,” reports Malcolm Cullen. “Bizarrely, they’ve left in the note that advises Jim is best known for his ‘wooden leg’. Unless it’s true, I suppose. Is it true?” I don’t know for sure, but I’d say it is extraordinarily unlikely.

One transfer which isn’t happening is Etienne Capoue’s to West Brom. They might, however, snap up Martin Olsson from Norwich for a rumoured £4m, where he could play with his twin brother Jonas Olsson*.

Looks like Roger Johnson, a £7m signing from Birmingham City a few years back who more recently has been training on his own, is a free agent.

This from the Press Assocation:
Our reporter in the north-west Andy Hampson thinks Burnley could test Nottingham Forest’s resolve over midfielder Henri Lansbury. However, Fawaz Al Hasawi, the chairman and owner at Forest, is keen to hang on to his players. He tweeted this evening: “We will not be selling anyone . The season is still alive and we must hold on to our key players.”

Jamie Jackson’s sources at Old Trafford suggest that Anders Lindegaard will be staying in Manchester despite the arrival of Victor Valdés, and though Jesse Lingard may be leaving on loan it won’t be to Hull. Derby are apparently interested, though they’re busy finalising a deal for Tom Ince (from Hull, as it happens).

“As a Benfica fan, it really breaks me that we have never given a proper chance to Djuricic,” writes Martinho Lucas Pires. “He showed promising glimpses of a creative organiser, but because Benfica does not play with a No10 he was often deployed as a winger or a second-forward, where he could not shine that much. But at times you could see that he had very good passing vision and technique, and a powerful dribble. If Koeman manages to bring the Eredivisie form that made the Serbian a talent (and judging by the Eredivisie players he brought to the Saints, he seems to be pretty good at knowing they will adapt to the Premier League), I fancy Southampton will have a strong attacking boost.”
This is what someone who follows Serbian football had to say about him:
Djuricic has struggled since leaving Heerenveen 2 years ago but he's shown his talent in the past and still has time to turn things around

“Can I be the first of many to say what a great player Aaron Lennon will be for Everton,” emails Duncan Jones. “We’ve nowhere near enough players in the declining years of their career, more are always welcome.”
He’s only 27. Though I suppose you could argue that he peaked as a player at around the age of 21 or 22.

Hi all. A quick swirl of Twitter rumour to add to our transfer stew: there’s a hint of moves to West Brom for Darren Fletcher and Carlton Cole, a soupçon of collapsed moves for Emmanuel Adebayor to West Ham and Etienne Capoue to the Baggies, and Sky Sport’s man at St Mary’s reckons Djuricic is not going to be the only arrival in the final few hours of the window.

“The saddest thing about modern football (or, at least, my relationship with modern football) is that I’m not sad about Ben Arfa possibly retiring,” writes Matt Dony. “I am sad that Liverpool aren’t getting a January striker, though. Suárez, Sturridge, they’ve got a good history. (Yes, we’ll gloss over Carroll.)”
What infuriates me about Ben Arfa is that the only thing stopping him from continuing his career with a good club in France is the fact that he played an Under-21 fixture for Newcastle in August. I understand why Fifa insist that players can’t play for more than two clubs in a season, but a) he didn’t really play for Newcastle; and b) there have got to be circumstances where the rule is waived, after an appeal. The decision lacks all logic, has robbed a player of at least six months of a short career, the rules should be changed immediately and whoever responsible for this decision should be kicked very hard in the backside.

It’s being reported that a deal to take Aaron Lennon to Everton has been agreed, and needs only his diminutive, nippy little signature to be complete. Spurs, meanwhile, are minutes away from confirming the signing of Delle Ali from MK Dons, with his medical now almost complete. He will then rejoin the Dons on loan for the remainder of the season, where he could very well get injured, thus making the medical rather obsolete.

More on Aaron Lennon’s possible move to Everton, from Andy Hunter.
Everton have made a late play to sign Aaron Lennon from Tottenham. Roberto Martínez would be looking at a loan deal until the end of the season but, despite reports earlier in the window of a swap deal involving Kevin Mirallas, Everton are reluctant to let the Belgium penalty-thief go.
