Sixty World War II shells have been unearthed by construction workers at the site of an Asda store in Bridgend.

Police were called after three suspected shells were found in the car park.

When bomb squad officers arrived they found a total of 60 shells which they then removed for disposal.

A road and multi-storey car park were closed for several hours as a precaution. Workers found a mortar bomb at the same site about a month ago.

South Wales Police received a report of the suspected shells at 0921 GMT on Wednesday and the area was sealed off.

The road and car park were reopened at around 1600 GMT.

On 20 December 2007 the area was also cordoned off while officers dealt with a single WWII bomb uncovered in a trench at the same site.
