Nalbandian seals Masters Cup spot Blake completes Masters Cup field
(4 days later)
Defending champion David Nalbandian secured his place in the eight-man Masters Cup without hitting a ball. American James Blake was the final player to qualify for the Masters Cup in Shanghai, starting on 12 November.
The Argentine booked his spot in Shanghai when rival James Blake lost to Tommy Haas at the Paris Masters. "Qualifying for Tennis Masters Cup is a great accomplishment signifying an all-around good year," said Blake.
Spain's Tommy Robredo also booked his berth in China with a 6-4 7-6 (7-1) win over France's Paul-Henri Mathieu. "It's not something I set as a goal, but I'm honoured to be considered among the game's elite."
Roger Federer, Rafael Nadal, Ivan Ljubicic, Andy Roddick and Nikolay Davydenko have already qualified for the event, starting on 12 November. Roger Federer, Rafael Nadal, Ivan Ljubicic, Andy Roddick, Nikolay Davydenko, Tommy Robredo and David Nalbandian complete the line-up.
Blake now sits in the eighth and final qualifying place but he can be overtaken by Mario Ancic if the Croatian ninth seed wins his quarter-final on Friday.
Tommy Haas, the German 10th seed, could also still make the China finale but he needs to win the Paris title and hope Ancic falls before the final.
Nalbandian, who is not playing in Paris because of a stomach injury, beat Federer in a dramatic five-set final to win last year's Masters Cup.
