Canada’s Jane Channell had a brush with danger after colliding with a broom near the top of her run at a skeleton World Cup event which doubled as the European Championship in Igls, Austria on Saturday.

Channell, travelling at approximately 30kmph and thankfully not the 120kmph she would have reached towards the end of her run, struck a broom that had been left by one of the race officials who had been sweeping the track due to heavy snow.

Channell escaped unharmed and was permitted a second attempt at her first run but actually completed the course in a slower time, clocking 55.15sec to place 15th. In her second run she improved that to 11th overall.

It completed a difficult weekend for Channell who finished seventh in Friday’s race at the double World Cup event.

Great Britain’s Lizzy Yarnold meanwhile, enjoyed a far happier weekend, winning both World Cup races – the second of which doubled as the European Championship – to move to third in the overall rankings and add further silverware to the Olympic gold medal she won at Sochi 2014.
