Louis van Gaal has been granted a 24-hour extension by the Football Association to respond to the charge of bringing the game into disrepute following a request by Manchester United.

While it is understood this can be normal practice for clubs, no date has yet been set for the hearing which will be before an independent regulatory commission.

Van Gaal has confirmed he will plead not guilty to the count, which is for comments the Dutchman made after United’s goalless draw at Cambridge United in the FA Cup on 23 January, with the manager accused of implying bias on the part of the match referee, Chris Foy.

Last week the 63-year-old said: “I am not angry. I am very disappointed. I am now for nearly 30 years a trainer-coach or manager and I have never been charged. And still, up to now, I don’t think that I said something wrong.”
