Garbage’s Shirley Manson has accused Kanye West of being “small and petty and spoilt” after he criticised Beck for winning album of the year on Sunday night instead of Beyoncé.

Posting an open letter on Facebook, the Scottish artist addressed West’s recent on-stage interruption during Beck’s Grammy acceptance speech, and the subsequent backstage interview in which the Yeezus rapper claimed Beck’s win of Album of the Year was “disrespectful to inspiration”.

Manson wrote:

Dear Kanye West

It is YOU who is so busy disrespecting artistry.

You disrespect your own remarkable talents and more importantly you disrespect the talent, hard work and tenacity of all artists when you go so rudely and savagely after such an accomplished and humble artist like BECK.

You make yourself look small and petty and spoilt.

In attempting to reduce the importance of one great talent over another, you make a mockery of all musicians and music from every genre, including your own.

Grow up and stop throwing your toys around.

You are making yourself look like a complete twat.

Ps. I am pretty certain Beyoncé doesn’t need you fighting any battles on her account. Seems like she’s got everything covered perfectly well on her own

West’s brief stage invasion at Sunday night’s Grammy awards at first seemed like a bold and yet playful reference to his famous interruption of Taylor Swift’s acceptance speech at the 2009 MTV VMAs. Soon after, however, it was made clear that he was acting once again in earnest defence of Beyoncé.

Despite a mostly antagonistic response towards West following the Grammy events on social media, Beck was in forgiving spirits and even commended the rapper’s outburst: “I thought she was going to win. Come on, she’s Beyoncé! . . . You can’t please everybody, man. I still love [West] and think he’s genius. I aspire to do what he does,” he told US Weekly during the Universal Music Group after-party.

“I was just so excited he was coming up. [West] deserves to be onstage as much as anybody. How many great records has he put out in the last five years, right?”

Since Beck’s double win and the Kanye altercation, his album Morning Phase has seen a 524 percent jump in streams worldwide, according to the digital music service.
