(about 2 hours later)
Police are investigating the theft of a laptop from the Ministry of Defence. West Midlands police are investigating the theft of a laptop from a Royal Navy officer which held personal details of 600,000 people, it has been confirmed.
An MoD spokesman confirmed that a laptop had been stolen, but would not give any details about when or where the theft occurred. The Ministry of Defence said it was stolen in Birmingham on 9 January.
He refused to comment on reports that the laptop contained the details of 600 armed forced recruits. The laptop contains data including passport numbers, National Insurance numbers and driving licence details.
Scotland Yard could not confirm it was the force investigating the theft. The MoD said it would make a full statement "at the earliest opportunity". They relate to people who had "either expressed an interest in, or have joined, the Royal Navy, Royal Marines and the Royal Air Force".
The ministry said it was treating the theft with the "utmost seriousness".
